Drafting Stump Speeches and Customizing By Audience With Change Agent
📋 STEP BY STEP
Here’s how you can use Change Agent to transform an interview with a candidate into a stump speech.
Step 1: Record the Interview
Conduct an in-depth, recorded interview with the candidate. This should be a relaxed conversation where the speaker feels comfortable discussing their motivations for running, their vision for change, and specific policy proposals.
Step 2: Upload the Transcript to Change Agent
Change Agent will automatically analyze the text and identify key themes, values, and policy proposals discussed in the interview.
- To upload the transcript as a file
- Click the “+” symbol to the left of the prompt window
- Choose your file
- To load the transcript from a webpage
- Copy the entire URL (NOTE: if the URL is for a Google Doc or other cloud service, make sure that sharing is set to “Anybody with the link”)
- Type
“#”
into the Change Agent prompt window and paste your URL immediately after the“#”
- Click on the gray dialog window that says
#[URL]
to load the interview
Step 3: Prompt Change Agent to Draft the Speech
Make sure to regenerate the answer at least five times. The first attempts only require a simple prompt that provides a baseline such as “Generate a stump speech for [CANDIDATE NAME] who is running for [OFFICE].”
Step 4: Review & Revise
Choose the version that you like most and ask follow-up prompts such as “Rewrite the speech to highlight reproductive rights”
to ensure that the speech emphasizes the right themes, values, and issues in the tone that best matches the candidate. Once you have a good draft or set of drafts ready, review it with the candidate to make any necessary revisions. Remember, this speech should reflect the candidate’s authentic voice and passion, so take their feedback into account.
Step 5: Finalize, Deliver, and Customize by Audience
Now your candidate is ready to deliver a powerful, personalized message directly to voters. You can easily customize the stump speech by audience with a prompt such as “This stump speech will be delivered to the Wellstone Democratic Club. Rewrite the stump speech to emphasize [the issues that the club cares about most].”
📘 BACKGROUND
Current Process
In traditional political campaigns, drafting a stump speech is often a meticulous and time-consuming task. It typically involves the candidate, their campaign manager, and sometimes a team of writers and advisors. The process begins with brainstorming sessions where the candidate outlines their key messages, values, and policy proposals. This raw information is then crafted into a compelling narrative by the writing team, who work to ensure that each point is communicated clearly and effectively.
Once a draft is prepared, it undergoes multiple rounds of revisions – both for content and tone. The speech is tested on focus groups or trusted advisors for feedback before being finalized. Throughout the campaign, the stump speech evolves as new issues emerge or based on audience response, requiring continuous editing and refining.
Opportunity
While this traditional process can produce powerful speeches, it has its limitations. It often fails to fully capture the candidate’s authentic voice or passion. Also, the multiple rounds of revisions can lead to diluted messages as various stakeholders weigh in with their perspectives.
Change Agent offers an innovative solution to these challenges by enabling candidates to speak naturally about why they’re running for office during an interview with their campaign manager. By using Change Agent to analyze this conversation, we can generate a stump speech that retains the candidate’s unique voice and passion while still delivering key messages effectively.
