The role
You’ll join a small, fast-moving team building an AI platform used by unions, nonprofits, and advocacy organizations. This is not a specialized engineering role — you’ll touch everything: backend, frontend, infrastructure, integrations, and the AI systems in between.
What you’ll work on, roughly in priority order:
- Backend: Python with FastAPI and SQLAlchemy, powering a multi-tenant AI/LLM platform — RAG pipelines, MCP/tool integrations, and agentic workflows
- Infra: GCP, Terraform, Docker, Cloudflare, Postgres
- AI infrastructure: working with self-hosted open-source LLMs alongside commercial models, and the plumbing that makes them useful — embeddings, retrieval, evaluation, orchestration
- Frontend: SvelteKit + TypeScript + Tailwind CSS — building and maintaining the product surfaces our clients use
- Integrations: Stripe, Auth0/Okta SSO, and the long tail of tools our clients depend on
We care more about your grasp of core AI concepts and software engineering fundamentals than any specific framework. Frameworks can be learned in a sprint. Judgment can’t.
How we work with AI
Everyone here uses AI in their work, daily. You’ll have access to our platform and unlimited tokens. We expect you to use them with initiative and be forward-thinking and ambitious about what we can build and how.
What we actually look for isn’t prompt tricks. It’s this: you treat AI output as a draft, not an answer. You catch what it gets wrong, you debug it when it breaks, you can explain code you didn’t fully write, and you know when to put the tool down and think. If AI writes your first drafts but you own every line that ships, you’ll fit right in.
Who thrives here
- You’re built for a startup. Small team, no playbooks, high autonomy. You’re highly independent and independently motivated — you don’t wait to be told what to do next, and you don’t need close supervision to drive a fuzzy problem to done. You understand what a startup actually is and you buy into the mission and vision of the company, not just the job description.
- You care about the mission. Sharing the values behind this work is a must, not a bonus — that part is non-negotiable. You don’t need to come from movement or organizing experience to thrive here, but you do have to share our mission.
- You’re AI-forward. Not AI-curious — AI-forward. You’ve already rewired how you work around these tools, and you’re excited to go further.
- You figure things out. Small team means you wear multiple hats and solve problems nobody wrote a playbook for. You can bridge technical and non-technical — you’re as comfortable talking to an organizer about what they need as you are designing the schema behind it.
- You have product instincts. This isn’t a code-monkey role. You’ll ask “why are we building this?” before “how do we build this?”
- You learn fast. AI moves the floor every few months. We need someone whose learning loop is fast enough to keep up — and who drags the rest of us along.
- You communicate directly. Say what you mean, ask for what you need. You’ll have to be able to accommodate many different communication styles.
- You’ve worked remotely before and you’re good at it. We manage by output: calendar, tasks, and results. This isn’t a place where you can disappear for three days.
Requirements
These are what we are looking for, but we are hiring a person not a list of checkboxes; if you don’t meet all of these requirements but still feel like you can contribute to our mission, please send in your application.
- 1–3 years of professional software engineering experience (or equivalent time shipping real projects — we care about what you’ve built more than where you got the years)
- Working knowledge of Python and comfort across a web stack (ours: FastAPI, SvelteKit/TypeScript, GCP, Terraform, Postgres — but frameworks can be learned in a sprint)
- Practical fluency with modern software development workflow: version control and collaboration on GitHub (branching, pull requests, code review), bug reporting and working within a ticketing system, and comfortable developing in local and staging/deployed environments
- Practical, working fluency with AI tools in your day-to-day development: knowing how to prompt effectively, how to manage context, how to use AI coding harnesses (e.g., OpenCode), AI coding best practices — for both safety and effectiveness — and how to work with AI integrations and skills.
- Clear, direct communication — you can explain technical tradeoffs to engineers and non-technical colleagues alike, in writing and out loud
- Independence and initiative — you can take a fuzzy problem and drive it to done without close supervision
- Fast learning and adaptability — comfortable picking up new tools and concepts as the AI landscape shifts
- Authorized to work in the United States
Compensation & Benefits
$80,000–$110,000, depending on experience.
Benefits:
- 100% employer-paid health insurance — medical and dental premiums covered in full
- 401(k) with company match
- Equity — everyone here owns a piece of what we’re building
- Generous PTO
We’re a small, mission-driven team, and we’re honest that this salary band sits below big tech. What it buys instead is ownership of real systems, ship-what-you-build autonomy, and work whose impact you can see immediately — for organizations fighting for workers, rights, and communities.
Note: This hire begins as a contract-to-hire engagement: an initial contract period with the clear intent to convert to a full-time role if it’s working well for both sides.
